Justice and Grace: An eye for an eye versus turn the other cheek

This week's Torah portion Mishpatim, the ordinances or laws, which are derived from the 10 Commandments and which function as the basis for "common law". We discuss the covenant between the LORD and the Israelites, and the consummation of the marriage ceremony in Exodus 24. We compare and contrast the "lex talionis", the law of measures, an eye for an eye versus the law of grace that Yeshua preaches in the Sermon on the Mount in this week's new Covenant portion Mathew5:38-48. Yeshua calls us to turn the other cheek, and to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven;" And in Mathew 5:48 "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." This challenge and call to mercy and grace often stands opposed to the call for justice. Because as the LORD says in Exodus 22:26 "for I am gracious." Is justice also grace? We discuss the coming of the angel of the LORD described in Exodus 23:20-25 and the commandment to follow him in Ex23:21:"Take heed of him, and hearken unto his voice; be not rebellious against him; for he will not pardon your transgressions; for My name is in him." The law and it's ordinances condemn us because none of us can follow perfectly neither the letter and certainly not the spirit of the law. Therefore, we need a savior for our atonement. Blessed be the name of Yeshua. Holy Spirit work inside of us to create a clean heart.
